Close your eyes and imagine opening your favorite gift of all time. Picture your child’s priceless reaction while opening a gift. Giving and receiving gifts are fun and rewarding, but the best gifts are the ones not usually wrapped. The best gift is the love of learning. It is from this gift, that all others flow.

Parental involvement is a critical factor in a child’s learning. Parents must instill a love for learning. It can be instilled, eliminate the excuses. Children should be read to on a nightly basis. They can even be shown educational videos that don’t require a video game. The difference between the rich and the poor is in the value of education. While it’s true it takes money to make money; you can’t make money unless you’re educated. Literacy, much like poverty, is generational. If the parents are active in their child’s education and place a high value on it, the child’s chances of being successful greatly increase.

How can we expect our children to love reading and learning if they never see us model it? Does your home have books on display you’ve read? Does your child’s room have books in it? Children cannot appreciate or learn from something that is not modeled.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

Mahatma Gandhi

When an early emphasis is placed on literacy and education it will instill an internal drive for learning. Individuals will develop a mindset that knowledge is power. A hunger for information will become the driving force, and this internal quest for knowledge will only grow. As one matures and continues to develop they will realize that true education is self-education.

As I have grown through my twenties and early thirties I have developed an unextinguishable quest for knowledge. I want to learn from the best in my field. I am constantly reading from and about the best coaches, writers, and speakers. I know in time if I stay on this path, and true to the process, that I can achieve the big goals that I have. The best investment anyone can make is in themselves. Self-education and mastery is the only one true way to wealth. And it’s not an overnight success.

Learning never exhausts the mind.

Leonardo da Vinci

In order to instill these values in children parents must teach their children the brain is a muscle. Just as our physical strength grows from exercise at the gym, our mental strength and capacity grows with reading and study.  Effort in school should be praised more than a letter grade. As long as parents teach children trying hard and never giving up are most important, kids will develop the proper work ethic and value system.

The only way anyone ever gets better is through learning. In athletics, the mental is more important than the physical. There a ton of great athletes walking around who never made because they didn’t have what it takes mentally.

What are you doing on a daily basis to continue your education? What are you doing on a daily basis to give The Best Gift to your children?

As always, thanks for reading, have a great week, and be an RGP today!
